Tubular Joint Analysis: The examination of tubular connections through DFT technology unveils the following insights:
Welded and Bolted Connections: The junction of beams and columns often involves on-site bolting. When connecting a Rectangular Hollow Section (RHS) beam to an L-section column, employing a welded extended end-plate on the beam allows conventional bolted attachment to the column’s flange or web. Bolts may even be countersunk into a substantial end plate for visual significance. A range of typical simple connections uses cleats welded to an RHS column, featuring a welded fin plate on the column’s face, while the supporting bracket design adds visual intrigue.
Column Bases: Tubular column bases encompass two primary types: Pinned and Rigid. Design nuances reflect the transmission of forces and moments. A true pinned connection can be achieved through a single pin on the projecting plate.
Welded Fins: To provide direct attachment for secondary members, fins or brackets might be welded onto the sides of Circular Hollow Section (CHS), Square Hollow Section (SHS), or Rectangular Hollow Section (RHS). This demands meticulous design due to potential local distortion of larger hollow section walls. Alternatively, welded threaded studs coupled with extended washers may secure purlins to the section. Similar details facilitate the attachment of tension ties or rod-bracing components. For ties’ substantial local forces, ‘patch-type’ connections can smoothly transfer weld forces to the circular section’s walls by profiling around it. Numerous welded fin connections have successfully featured in major projects.
Reinforcement Connections: To optimize member resistance, selecting larger tubular sections with thin walls is efficient. However, connections are better designed using thicker chord members that remain smaller in section (ensuring they aren’t less than bracing members). This mandates a compromise between overall design and fabrication efficiency. In cases where member size or thickness can’t be increased, connection strength might be locally enhanced to withstand applied forces. Welding plates to the chord face achieves this reinforcement. Note that overlaps amplify connection resistance, particularly for RHS members. When an intersection necessitates a third member, a ‘T’ piece can be incorporated. Non-standard stiffened K connections can also augment connection load capacity.
